In this room we tell the story of the Real Maestranza de Ronda, founded nearly 450 years ago as a noble brotherhood of horsemen charged with the defence of the city and surrounding area. We show the Maestranza's development as the first organised riding school in Spain teaching both military and equestrian arts, and the institution's contribution to Ronda's urban expansion in the 18th century coinciding with the emergence of bullfighting as a major public spectacle.
Felipe VIToday the Real Maestranza is a not-for-profit organisation whose purpose is the maintenance of its riding school as well as the preservation of its buildings, archives and cultural legacy so that they remain accessible to all. In line with a tradition established over the centuries, the current honorary head of the Real Maestranza is HM King Felipe VI.
